A Short Sail in the Sea of Cortez

This one has been on our list for a while. Debbie’s in particular. This is where the big animals are. Whale Sharks (neither whale not shark), Dolphins for miles, sea lions and the promise of the occasional whale sighting. In December it’s 20 degrees in Chicago – in Baja, 80. We bareboat chartered a Lagoon 40 S2, an owners version leaving plenty of room for Debbie and I : }.

We started in La Paz offering plenty of restaurant possibilities and plenty of provisioning resources. From La Paz we made way for Isla Espiritu Santo for our first couple of nights. Then Isla Partida for a couple more. Then to Isla San Francisco for a couple more. This was one of the more beautiful anchorages. Plenty of hiking and local fish to fix on board. Then trace of wake back to La Paz with a couple more nights at anchor.

We never feel like there is anywhere near enough time to really experience the area when on a charter. There is just not enough time. Which is why we are looking forward to our extended trip soon on the horizon.

Overall this was a great trip with some really remote sailing. No beach bars and restaurants. Just sea meeting desert. The sailing was much like sailing in Lake Michigan where the wind shifts and changes dramatically throughout the day and from day to day. With, of course, some windless days. This trip tested our anchoring patience since there is little other choice. While the holding was pretty good in most places we did experience some rough swells from fetch a few nights.
