We took a day trip to Kamakura. It was great to get out of Tokyo for a while and we will do more of this. Kamakura is just a little over an hour south on what appeared to be a regular commuter train yet cruised up to 75 mph. A smallish town near the coast, Kamakura has lots of shrines and temples, plenty of restaurants to pick from, narrow streets to explore, and the Great Buddha of Kamakura – the second tallest in Japan. There are also hiking trails. This is where Debbie and I went different directions – she to Hasedera, a Buddhist temple on a hill overlooking the coast, and I on a 5 km trail loop —half of it felt straight up the hill. Fortunately I was rewarded with a French cafe at the top, the way a civilized hike should be.
